The course will prepare healthcare professionals to identify and address the needs of the elderly in a variety of healthcare settings through increasing knowledge of demographic trends related to aging, identification of age-related issues, awareness and early detection of elderly abuse, assessment and interventions in the elderly, and end of life care.
At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:
- Correlate current demographic characteristics of the older adult population with their current healthcare needs and treatment.
- Identify and describe major age-related physiologic and cognitive changes in the geriatric population.
- Identify and describe common health conditions, prevention, and treatment recommendations.
- Recognize early detection of signs of elder abuse, risk factors, timely intervention, and proper reporting.
- Describe the effects of end-of-life issues on patients and their caregivers.
