Medical Emergencies 101 for Dental Settings: Recognize, Respond, and Stabilize

$36.00

This curriculum will give dental workers the knowledge they need to identify and treat common medical emergencies that might happen in settings that provide oral health care. The importance of risk assessment in averting medical emergencies will be highlighted throughout the course, as well as how to distinguish between situations that may be life-threatening and those that need quick stabilization but are not immediately life-threatening.

This course is designed for dental professionals and dental team members who have a basic understanding of clinical procedures, patient assessment, and emergency preparedness in the dental setting. Prior training in basic life support, medical emergency recognition, or chairside patient management is recommended so participants can fully understand the risk-assessment, recognition, and stabilization concepts covered in the course.

Participants will have gained the following skills after completing this activity:

  1. Discuss the procedural and patient-specific risk factors that can cause dental crises.
  2. Describe how to conduct a secondary patient survey when a perioperative incident is developing.
  3. Identify the symptoms and indications of common medical emergencies.
  4. Describe how to conduct a primary patient survey when a perioperative incident is developing.
  5. Recognize the necessary steps to stabilize the patient until emergency medical assistance arrives.
  6. Assess the precautions dental practitioners can take in the event of a medical emergency.
