Medication Administration and Medical Error Prevention

This course equips Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides with the necessary knowledge and skills for safe medication administration, focusing on Florida's specific laws and regulations. It underscores the importance of understanding and complying with legal standards to ensure patient safety and well-being. The introduction sets the stage for the critical role of safe medication practices in healthcare, laying the groundwork for a more in-depth exploration of the topic.

Diving deeper, the course covers the fundamentals of medication administration and detailed instructions on various routes, including oral, ophthalmic, otic, rectal, topical, enteral, inhalation/nebulization, and transdermal methods. This comprehensive approach aims to prepare CNAs and Home Health Aides to safely manage and administer medications in diverse healthcare settings, enhancing patient care quality and adherence to medication safety protocols.

This course fulfills the state of Florida’s annual two-hour in-service training requirement regarding medication administration and medication error prevention for certified nursing assistants. 

At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:

1. Recall Florida’s rules and regulations regarding medication administration by certified nursing assistants.
2. Describe the frequency of medication errors and common types of medication errors.
3. Identify steps that CNAs can take to reduce medication errors and improve patient safety.
4. Describe the various routes of medication administration.
5. Recall the steps involved in administering oral, ophthalmic, otic, rectal, topical, enteral, inhaled/nebulized, and transdermal medications.
